Hong Kong: International Dragon Boat Festival

This morning Saphia and I went to the International Dragon Boat Festival in the Stanley Market neighborhood here in Hong Kong.

I'll start with the background to the festival.

Many years ago a man jumped into true river as a form of protest. In response, the people of Hong Kong through dumplings in the water for the fish to eat and went out in dragon boats beating the drums so the fish would stay away. They did not want the fish to eat the man's body.

From then on, the festival has been held in honor of the man. We started the day by eating dumplings (not the mandu kind. These are leaves wrapped around sticky rice filled with sweet beans or fish) and then went to see the races.

The races were fun to watch, and we had decent weather (I managed to get a sunburn!). We watched with our feet in the water. Never have I felt such warm ocean water! After that we walked around Stanley Market a bit while drinking coconut milk (from baby coconuts, coz they're extra sweet).

On our way home we stopped at the market to get food for lunch and a few snacks to try later. Then it was back home for a nice family lunch. We had curry, cabbage, chicken & potato, naan, black jelly (herbal jelly, kind of like jellified tea), and lichee (thanks to Parth for teaching me how to eat them; it came in handy today).

Since then we've been hanging out. Tonight we are going to the Rotary ball (getting all dressed up and everything!)

Here are a few pictures from the day:
